CLT

What the heck actually is CLT?

Cross Laminated Timber, or CLT, is a type of engineered wood product created by bonding layers of solid-sawn lumber. The layers are arranged in a crosswise pattern, with each layer perpendicular to the one below it. This design allows for optimal use of the material and enhances the stability of the panel's shape. The CLT boards used in Livful houses have a total thickness of 60 mm, made up of 20 mm thick layers of spruce wood.

CLT is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable option for building structures compared to concrete and steel. This is because CLT is made from renewable wood, which captures carbon throughout its lifecycle. Additionally, CLT is lighter than traditional building materials, requiring less energy to transport, and can be constructed more quickly, resulting in a reduction of net CO2 emissions. These factors combined make CLT a stronger, lighter, and more sustainable alternative to concrete and steel.
Nature-friendly
CLT is an environmentally responsible and sustainable material because it is made from wood, a renewable resource, and does not contribute to air pollution through the burning of fossil fuels during production. Furthermore, the process of using wood for construction helps sequester carbon, and by replanting trees, it is possible to maintain a zero carbon footprint over the long term. This aligns with Livful's goal of promoting sustainable building practices.
Design-friendly
CLT is a versatile material that can be used in a wide range of construction applications, including walls, roofs, and ceilings. Its exceptional shape retention and rigidity properties make it ideal for use in various structures, providing nearly limitless design possibilities.
Pre-treatments
Livful mini-houses are constructed using CLT wall, floor, and roof panels that are pre-fabricated in a controlled factory environment using a fully automated CNC bench. This process ensures a quick and efficient construction process, reducing the amount of time and cost required for on-site erection. By using CLT panels that have undergone all necessary treatments in a controlled factory environment, Livful is able to streamline the construction process and provide customers with a cost-effective solution.
Thermal insulation
The triple layer design of CLT provides superior thermal insulation compared to traditional log construction. The intersecting layers of wood and the integrity of the panels contribute to heat retention, resulting in a more energy-efficient building. This means that CLT-constructed buildings are typically more thermally efficient and provide improved indoor comfort.
CLT represents a significant advancement in building design and construction, providing an opportunity to create tiny houses that are both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally responsible. It offers a unique combination of design flexibility, energy efficiency, and quick and efficient construction, making it possible to build tiny houses that are not only functional, but also beautiful and sustainable. CLT represents a step forward in the evolution of building materials and construction practices, making it easier to build tiny homes that meet the needs of today's consumers.

Livful is a spinoff of Timbeco

Thanks to our rich heritage and passion for innovation, Livful emerged as a result of continuous development and collaboration with Timbeco team. With a proven track record of crafting high-quality products, Timbeco has successfully manufactured over 2,500 buildings spanning 26 countries, including Japan, Norway, Sweden, Finland, and the UK, to name a few. An impressive 95% of our production is exported globally. Throughout our journey, Timbeco has demonstrated its ability to adapt, evolve, and gather valuable knowledge and experience from both successes and setbacks. Fueled by our deep-rooted appreciation for wood and a burning desire to create superior affordable houses, the Livful team is dedicated to providing sustainable and space-efficient housing solutions in the era of housing crises. Our daily mission is to learn, grow, and refine our approach, all with the ultimate goal of building a brighter future through innovative and eco-friendly living spaces.

The journey to Japan

The Leisalu family has a rich tradition in woodworking, starting with grandfather Lembit Leisalu who built the first log houses with his father. The family business continued to grow and evolve with brothers Urmas and Tarmo Leisalu, who honed their wood carving skills and became experts in log house construction. In 1993, the company was officially formed and has since then been delivering high-quality log houses to customers all over the world, including Japan. Japanese customers, in particular, are known for their skepticism and prefer to inspect the product and production in person, which has helped the company further refine their skills and deliver even better quality products. The company, now called Timbeco and its subsidiary Livful, continues to build on the family's legacy of mastery and dedication to wood construction.

In the early years, it was unfortunate that we had to send individual logs by plane to Japan to replace the scrap. This was unexpectedly inconvenient and costly, leading us to prioritize avoiding any scrap production.

2500+ containers of houses exported

The Timbeco company has grown branches that complement and support each other. Timbeco Woodmill, under the leadership of Urmas Leisalu, focuses on preparing and finishing timber for traditional log homes. In 2002, Siim Leisalu, the third generation dedicated to wooden homes, joined the company and started the Timbeco Woodhouse branch. This branch has been dedicated to developing new technologies and construction methods. Through constant innovation, adaptation to the construction market and global trends, business model renewal, and expansion into new markets, Timbeco Woodhouse has expanded into the construction of modular buildings. The company has also added Timbeco Ehitus, which serves Estonian customers, and Timbeco Construction, which builds structures for clients beyond the borders.

30 years on the market

The Timbeco family of companies has welcomed a new member, Livful, which was established in 2021 and is led by Kadi-Riin Lomp, daughter of Urmas and the next representative of the third generation. The team at Livful was inspired by the challenges of the pandemic to create small, innovative homes with a zero or even negative carbon footprint. The focus was on quick assembly and environmentally friendly solutions.

Livful operates with a clear vision to revolutionise the wooden home construction industry. This does not mean abandoning traditional methods; the established branches of the company continue to offer both log homes and modular solutions. The Timbeco family has grown into a strong and resilient entity, with a rich history and diverse offerings, and will continue to grow in the future.
